PAVING TILES, co:

I he plan "I i'»nnin^ a sui space in Pavements in which t<> place a iloor-m.u is frequentlj

and the method of constructing this Mat-space may be thus explained. An Iron or Brass Frame must
made u> the proper size and -, (say cither square or oblong,) to admit of the Mat being pi

within it. This Iron or Brass frame is usually about \ inch thick, by 3 inches di ep; and when pn
the Foundations for the Pavement it should he placed in the position which it is intended t<> occup

I ii«r riles at the bottom <>l the Mat-space may be of the plainest description, as <»! course the Mat al .

irers them. When a Mat-space is required, an intimation to that effect should be made to M. II & (
at the time of giving the On ind the size of the Mat should be si 1 nabli them to fit it in that

position which may best suit th arrangement ol the Patt< w it in its proper place in 1

Working-drawing of the Pavement.

In seU-cting a Pavement for an open \ 1 l.ih. or Other pi 1 M tther, it fid,

far as possible, those Patterns in which plain Buff or Jh riles are found, as instances I
occurred where riles of these colors hav< lined injury from damp and frost

GLAZED DADO & WALL TILING, continued.

**>

It is very desirable, and particularly recommended, wherever possible, that Wall Tiles be fixed from
Floor to Ceiling, <\nd in such cases it is simply a question of taste as to whether the Design employed be
the same all over, or a Dado effect adopted to the height say 4 or 5 feet from the Floor

In some of the Patterns of Glazed Dado and Wall Piling displayed in this Catalogue, a skirling Tile,
with Moulded top. is shewn; and further, in some of the Patterns a Moulded Capping Tile in plain color
is introduced at the top of the Dado. These Skirting and Capping Tiles can be executed in any
Color desired. As a substitution for such Skirting and Capping Tiles, plain glazed Tiles may,
at less cost, be fixed h\ish with the other parts of the Wall Tiling. Where, however, a Dado only
is required in Tile-work, a Tile Capping is essential as a finish at the top of the Dado, tu separate and
define the latter from the Plaster or Brick Walls above.

The advantage of Glazed Tile-Dad.., for Halls, Corridors. Schools. Kailwaj Booking Offices, and other
Public places must be at once apparent, and cannot be too highly recommended.

M. H. & Co manufacture very extensively the 6x6 While glazed Tiles for lining the Walls of Areas
or other places where a reflection of Light, or a pure and clean effect, is desired.

In the case of Internal Angles of a Wall, the Tiles will, in themselves, form a natural juncture, but
Internal Curve.i \ngles can 1"- supplied if required, and for such works as Hospitals, Infirmaries,
Public Conveniences etc.. the) are recommended ,i\^{ will be found most essential tor Sanitary purposes.

For External Angles an Independent Beading is indispensable, and for this purpose Idle Headings ot
various sizes and shi|><--> are mad

( ombination Angle riles tor Wall-, and Sanitarj base or skirting riles, are also supplied. IHust.-ations

,,l these will be found on Plate- 7 ;, of this Catalogue.

CHURCH TILING.

There is no purpose to which Tiles are better adapted than

the decoration of the Flm rs and Walls of Churches. The

Kncaustic Tiles found in Ancient Structures appear to ha\ been almost exclusively associated with
Church decoration; and since the revival of the Art b) M II. -.\: Co.. more than 60 years ago,
many hundreds of Churches have been paved or otherwise ad.. me,! with Tiles ol their manufacture.
The following observations upon riling for Churches maj be worthy ol consideration: —

It is customary, and without doubt correct, that the Tile paving in the Nave or West end of a Church
should be subservient in to that used in the Chancel; or. .is it may still better be described, the

Tiling should increa in richness from West to East, thus securing to the Altar space the m
important Pavement in the Church. There are patterns in this Catalogue appropriate, and in fact
expressly adapted for ChurYh Pavements, but in case a suitable selection cannot be made for .my
particular work under consideration, M. H. & Co will be [..leased to send further illustrations on
application, or, if necessary, to prepare and submit a special I >■ sign, together with a Tender tor the whole
of the Tiling fixed compli including every expense. To enable them to arrange such a design, it is
necessary that th mould be furnished with a proper ground plan, giving the exact dimensioi >l Ch<
